On view through June 19, 2016
Well known for his urban scenes of New York, Boston and Paris, Childe Hassam, a master of American Impressionism, also sought inspiration from more rural locales. Hassam spent many summers on the Isles of Shoals in Maine and the radiant works he created there are among his most prized canvases. Using oil and watercolor, Hassam captured the region’s craggy coast, sublime light and picturesque island gardens, extolling the divine qualities of the natural world. This exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art features thirty-nine of Hassam’s finest paintings of the Isles of Shoals, borrowed from an array of distinguished museums and private collections, including the National Gallery of Art and the Yale University Art Gallery. Ansel Adams: Early Works, Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, NY

April 1-September 18, 2016

The famed environmental photographer Ansel Adams is best known for his sharp, black-and-white photographs of the American landscape. This exhibition at the Fenimore Art Museum highlights the small-scale prints made by Adams from the 1920s into the 1950s, a pivotal period in the artist’s career. In the 1920s, Adams created his Parmelian prints—warm, soft-focused images of the High Sierras—while the 1930s saw the development of a more sharp-focused style. After World War II, Adams continued to refine his technique, adopting a high-contrast printmaking process that yielded dramatic, almost magical images. Click here for more information.

This spectacular event will explore a range of topics, including how the role of parlor furnishings evolved from the eighteenth to nineteenth century; the uses and meanings of the tea table form; and the specialized furniture forms, counters, rule books, and other accoutrements used in card playing, a popular leisure-time activity during this period.
