Vose Galleries in Boston has announced a major upcoming exhibition, Crosscurrents: The Colonies, Clubs & Schools that Established Impressionism in America. This show is the second of two significant exhibitions in 2016 to commemorate the galleries’ 175th anniversary.
Crosscurrents will showcase the extensive art collection of Abbot W. and Marcia L. Vose, which has never been displayed in its entirety before. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Abbot (Bill) Vose gave dozens of lectures around the country on the artists working in the colonies, clubs and schools that brought American Impressionism to light. His advocacy of the Impressionist movement helped catalyze the scholarly and public recognition that American Impressionism receives today. Crosscurrents will feature over 100 works for sale by American Impressionist artists around the turn of the century. The exhibition will also explore the tightly knit summer communities where artists formed a distinctly American style, such as Gloucester, Rockport and Cape Cod in Massachusetts, and Cos Cob, Old Lyme and Mystic in Connecticut.
