Constantin Brâncuși
Romanian, 1876 - 1957
Constantin Brâncuși (1876-1957) was a Romanian sculptor and painter who is considered one of the most important figures of modernist sculpture. He was born in a small village in Romania and moved to Paris in 1904 to study art.
Brâncuși's early work was influenced by the Art Nouveau and Symbolist movements, but he later developed a style that was characterized by its simplicity and abstraction. He often used basic geometric forms, such as spheres, cubes, and cones, and sought to capture the essence of his subjects through pure form and line.
Brâncuși's most famous works include "Bird in Space," a series of sculptures of abstracted bird forms, and "Endless Column," a monumental sculpture made of stacked rhomboid forms that he created for the city of Targu Jiu in Romania.
Brâncuși's work had a profound influence on the development of modernist sculpture, and his emphasis on pure form and abstraction helped to pave the way for the minimalist movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Today, his sculptures are highly sought after by collectors and museums around the world, and he is considered one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century.
