Doba Afolabi

Nigerian
Artist Bio: Doba Afolabi
Doba Afolabi was born amidst the picturesque mountains of southwest Nigeria, where he discovered his passion for expression largely thanks to his mother, a talented dancer who inspired his creative journey. Influenced by the works of masters like Monet, Van Gogh, and Degas, as well as the intricate forms of Yoruba stylized carvings, Doba developed a distinctive artistic voice.
He honed his craft at the renowned Zaria Art School, where he gained recognition as one of the "Zaria Rebels," a group celebrated for its innovative techniques and vibrant color palettes. Following his studies, Doba briefly worked as a graphic designer for the United Nations, before sharing his knowledge as an art instructor at Yaba Technical College in Lagos.
In pursuit of new opportunities, Doba immigrated to New York City, where he currently resides in Brooklyn. His first solo exhibition, titled "Buffalo Soldier," took place in 1999 at Asmar B Art Gallery in North East Miami, Florida. Since then, he has become a staple at the annual Black History Month art shows at Florida International University and has exhibited with Zenith Gallery. Doba is also represented by Dorsey Gallery in New York, where his compelling works continue to captivate audiences.
