Elaine De Kooning
American, 1920 - 1989
Elaine de Kooning (1918-1989) was an American abstract expressionist painter and art critic. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she studied at the Leonardo da Vinci Art School, the American Artists School, and the Black Mountain College in North Carolina. De Kooning was associated with the New York School of abstract expressionist artists, including her husband Willem de Kooning, and was known for her energetic and gestural brushwork. She was also an art critic and writer, contributing articles and reviews to publications such as ARTnews and Art in America. In addition to her abstract expressionist works, de Kooning also produced portraits of famous figures, including President John F. Kennedy. She received numerous awards throughout her career, including the President's Medal of Freedom in 1985, and her works continue to be highly regarded today as important contributions to the American art world.
