Elizabeth Murray
American, 1940 - 2007
Elizabeth Murray (1940-2007) was an American painter who was associated with the Neo-expressionist movement. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Mills College in Oakland, California.
Murray's work is characterized by its use of bold colors, flattened forms, and playful shapes. She often worked on irregularly shaped canvases and created sculptural installations that incorporated painting and drawing. Her work challenged traditional ideas of painting as a flat, two-dimensional medium and explored the possibilities of painting as an object in space.
Murray's work has been exhibited widely both in the United States and internationally. She was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Grant in 1999. Her paintings can be found in the collections of many major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. Murray passed away on August 12, 2007, in New York City.
