Fernando and Humberto Campana
Brazilian
Founded in 1984 by brothers Fernando (1961) and Humberto (1953) Campana, the Campana studio has garnered international acclaim for its innovative furniture design and captivating pieces. Celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2019, the studio is recognized as a trailblazer in disruptive design, pioneering a groundbreaking language in the field.
Inspired by Brazilian culture and traditions, their work embodies universal values such as freedom and human dignity, shaped by their life experiences. Embracing the concepts of transformation and reinvention, their creative process elevates everyday materials to a state of nobility. Brazilian characteristics, including vibrant colors, eclectic mixtures, and creative chaos, celebrate the triumph of simplicity in their poetic solutions.
Based in São Paulo, the Campana studio continuously explores new frontiers in design, spanning furniture, architecture, landscaping, fashion, scenography, and more. Bridging disciplines and fostering collaboration among communities and artists are pivotal sources of inspiration, enriching their repertoire and fostering a culture of free-thinking. Collaborations with diverse brands and industries enable them to integrate craftsmanship, sustainable production practices, and cutting-edge technologies into their creations.
Since 2002, Campana has produced limited editions and unique pieces handmade at their São Paulo studio. Their work is showcased in permanent collections at prestigious cultural institutions worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou and the Musée Des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, MoMA in New York, the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein.
Recognized as iconic figures in architecture by Interni (2018) and prominent design professionals by Wallpaper (2015, 2014), the Campana brothers have been named among the 100 most influential Brazilian personalities by Forbes (2013). In 2009, Instituto Campana was established to preserve their growing collection for future generations and promote design as a catalyst for social change through cultural and educational initiatives.
The accolades for Fernando and Humberto Campana are numerous: Humberto was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the University of the Arts London in 2019, and in 2012, both brothers received the Colbert Committee Award in Paris, were honored by Design Week in Beijing, received the Order of Cultural Merit in Brasília, and were bestowed the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture. They were also named Designers of the Year by Maison & Objet in Paris in 2012 and received the Design/Miami Designer of the Year award in 2008.
