Fernando Botero

Fernando Botero is a Colombian figurative artist and sculptor born on April 19, 1932, in Medellín, Colombia. He is best known for his signature style of creating exaggeratedly rotund figures, a technique called "Boterismo," which he developed in the 1950s.
Botero studied art at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, Spain, and later at the Art Students League in New York City. He has had numerous exhibitions of his work throughout the world, including at the Museum of Modern Art in Bogotá, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Musée Maillol in Paris.
In addition to painting, Botero has also produced a large body of sculpture, with his pieces featured in public spaces and private collections around the globe. Botero's work often features political or social commentary and frequently incorporates images of violence, wealth, and power.
Botero has won many awards and honors throughout his career, including the 2006 International Sculpture Center's Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award and the 2007 International Medal of Arts from the United States government. He currently resides in Paris, France.
