Gae Aulenti was an Italian architect and designer known for her innovative and influential work during the 20th century. She was born in 1927 in Palazzolo dello Stella, Italy, and studied architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan.
 
Aulenti's work spanned a wide range of mediums, including architecture, industrial design, and furniture design. She is perhaps best known for her work on the transformation of the Gare d'Orsay train station in Paris into the Musée d'Orsay museum in the 1980s. Aulenti's design for the museum was praised for its innovative use of space and light, and helped to establish her as a leading figure in the field of architecture.
 
In addition to her architectural work, Aulenti was also a prolific designer, creating a wide range of furniture and industrial design products. Her designs were characterized by their clean lines, use of high-quality materials, and attention to detail.
 
Some of Aulenti's most iconic designs include the "Pipistrello" lamp, which features a distinctive wing-like shape and is considered a classic of 20th-century design, and the "Locus Solus" chair, which was designed for the Italian furniture manufacturer Poltronova in 1964.
 
Aulenti's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and she has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the fields of architecture and design. She passed away in Milan in 2012, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking and influential work that continues to inspire designers and architects to this day.
