Gustav Stickley
American, 1858 - 1942
Gustav Stickley founded his furniture company, the Gustave Stickley Company- Craftsman Workshops with his brother Leopold Stickley in upstate NY in 1898. A few years later, Leopold started L&JG Stickley (with his brother John George) in 1901. The Gustav Stickley company was highly sucessufull with retail locations in New York, Boston and Washington, DC. Stickley was influenced by the British Arts & Crafts movement and Art Nouveau but advocated the creation of a disctinctly American style. Due to chaning interests and over expansion with business ventures, Gustav Stickley's business filed for bankruptcy in 1915.
