Tapiovaara trained as an interior designer at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki before beginning his career as a freelance designer in the 1930s. He worked for several leading Finnish furniture manufacturers, including Asko and Artek, and created a range of furniture designs that were characterized by their clean lines, functional forms, and use of high-quality materials.
 
One of Tapiovaara's most famous furniture designs is the Domus chair, which he created in 1946. The chair features a simple, elegant design that combines a bentwood frame with a molded plywood seat and backrest. The Domus chair became one of the most popular chairs of the mid-20th century and remains a classic example of Finnish modernist design.
 
In addition to his furniture designs, Tapiovaara also created a range of interior designs for public spaces, such as schools and libraries. He was known for his ability to create functional, welcoming spaces that were also aesthetically pleasing.
