Jackson Pollock
American, 1912 - 1956
Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) was an American painter and one of the leading figures of the Abstract Expressionist movement in the mid-20th century. He is known for his unique style of drip painting, which involved dripping and splattering paint onto a canvas laid flat on the ground.
Pollock's early works were influenced by Surrealism and the work of the Mexican muralists. However, he is best known for his later abstract works, which are characterized by their large size and the physicality of his approach. He would often work on a canvas laid flat on the ground, pouring and dripping paint onto the canvas with sticks, trowels, and other tools.
Pollock's work was controversial during his lifetime but has since become recognized as an important contribution to the development of abstract painting. His work is celebrated for its energy, dynamism, and expressive power.
Pollock's life was marked by personal struggles, including alcoholism and a turbulent marriage to fellow artist Lee Krasner. He died in a car accident at the age of 44, but his legacy continues to influence contemporary artists and popular culture.
