Jais Nielsen
Danish, 1885 - 1961
Jais Nielsen (1885-1961) was a Danish sculptor and ceramist. He was born in Denmark and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After completing his studies, he worked as a sculptor for a number of years, producing works in a variety of styles, including Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
In the 1920s, Nielsen began to focus more on ceramics, and he quickly established himself as one of the leading ceramists in Denmark. He worked for a number of different ceramic companies, including Royal Copenhagen, where he created some of the company's most famous designs.
Nielsen's ceramics are known for their clean, modern lines and minimalist designs. He was particularly skilled at creating simple, elegant forms that were both functional and beautiful. He also experimented with different glazes and firing techniques, and his work has a distinctive, almost ethereal quality.
In addition to his work as a ceramist, Nielsen also created a number of public sculptures, including several large-scale pieces in Copenhagen. He was highly respected in his native Denmark and is considered one of the country's most important artists of the early 20th century.
