Jean Despres

French, 1903 - 1988
Jean Després (1889-1980) was a French designer and metalworker known for his distinctive Art Deco style. He began his career as a jewelry designer, but later expanded his work to include metalwork, furniture, and decorative objects.

Després' designs were characterized by their bold, geometric forms and use of industrial materials such as chrome, brass, and aluminum. He often incorporated asymmetrical shapes and patterns into his designs, creating a sense of movement and energy.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Després was a leading figure in the French Art Deco movement, exhibiting his work at major international exhibitions such as the 1925 Paris Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. His designs were particularly popular with the fashion-conscious elite, and he counted Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli among his clients.

Després' legacy continues to be felt in the world of design and decorative arts today, with his work highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts. His bold, innovative designs continue to inspire new generations of designers and artists.
