Johann Baptist Homann
German, 1664 - 1724
Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a German cartographer, engraver, and publisher, who is widely regarded as one of the most important mapmakers of the early 18th century. Born in Nuremberg, Homann worked as an engraver and geographer before founding his own publishing company in 1702. His maps were known for their accuracy and detail, as well as their ornate and decorative style. Homann's maps covered a wide range of topics, from regional maps of Europe and other parts of the world to thematic maps of natural phenomena and historical events. In addition to his cartographic work, Homann also produced atlases and books on geography, astronomy, and other scientific subjects. His maps and publications were highly influential in shaping the European understanding of geography and the world at large during the early 18th century.
