John Dickinson
American, 1920 - 1982
After attending the Parsons School of Design, Dickinson moved to San Francisco in 1956 and launched his interior design firm which included furniture design. Although a very accomplished interior designer, Dickinson is primarily known for his highly original furniture, made out of concrete and steel with animal-like legs, hoofs, tree branches, table skirts and a monochromatic palette. Despite their modern appearance, Dickinson's pieces often referenced historical forms as seen in his “Etruscan” tables. His most iconic piece, “Three-Legged African Table”, combines primitive historic simplicity and whimsy. One motivation for the whimsy was to “take care of any pomposity it might have.’’ Heralded as one of the 20th century’s most important designers, his work is in high demand and sought after by leading interior designers and collectors. John Dickinson tables are highly sought to this day.
