John Perry Newell
American, 1832 - 1898
(1831-1898) Widely acknowledged as an accomplished maker of lithographic scenes, paintings by John Perry Newell are seldom found. Born in Newport, Newell studied lithography in Boston at John H. Bufford's firm in 1848. From 1853 to 1857 he traveled between the two cities. By the mid-1850s he was drawing ships and views of towns in southern New England that met with great popularity. His lithographic views of Narragansett Bay and Newport were particularly successful and when Newport began to experience an influx of affluent residents in the 1870s, he received numerous commissions to make drawings of the newly-built mansions. Newell generally worked independently, publishing his own prints, though he continued to draw for Bufford's company and for Endicott & Company and for Robertson, Seibert & Shearman. In the 1860s he sketched around Lake Champlain, and was thought to have worked in Brussels some time during the 1870s. In 1882 he moved to England, working as an art critic for several newspapers and continuing to make lithographs.
