Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius

Danish

Preben Fabricius (1931-1984) began his journey as a carpenter in Copenhagen before immersing himself in the world of interior design under the mentorship of Finn Juhl. It was during this time that Fabricius crossed paths with Jørgen Kastholm (1931-2007), a skilled blacksmith. Together, in 1961, they established a studio with a vision to craft furniture embodying a distinct aesthetic essence and enduring timelessness.

Their collaboration centered on refining form, material, and ergonomics, adhering closely to the functional yet aesthetically refined ethos of Scandinavian design, influenced by the principles of the Bauhaus movement.

In the late 1960s, Fabricius and Kastholm achieved a milestone in design history with the creation of the FK chair. This iconic bucket seat epitomizes classic design, serving as a beacon of modernity and a shining exemplar of minimalism. Notably, in 1969, it received the esteemed Federal Prize for “Good Form” in Germany, solidifying its status as a design icon.

Decades later, the FK chair remains a hallmark of Walter Knoll's furniture collection, revered for its timeless elegance and enduring appeal.
