Julian Schnabel, born on October 26, 1951, is a renowned American artist and filmmaker. He first gained widespread recognition in the 1980s for his innovative "plate paintings," which feature broken ceramic plates embedded in expansive canvases. Transitioning into film in the 1990s, Schnabel emerged as a key figure in independent arthouse cinema. His directorial work includes the critically acclaimed Before Night Falls, which launched Javier Bardem into the spotlight and earned him an Academy Award nomination, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which garnered four Academy Award nominations. For The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Schnabel received the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Director and the Golden Globe Award for Best Director, and was also nominated for the Academy Award and César Award for Best Director.
