Born Jerzy Zalszupin into a Jewish family in Poland in 1922, Zalszupin sought refuge in Romania during the Nazi occupation before completing his architecture studies at Bucharest’s École des Beaux-Arts in 1944. In 1949, he immigrated to Brazil, leaving behind the ravages of war-torn Europe. After establishing a successful architectural practice, Zalszupin followed his passion for furniture design by founding L'Atelier São Paulo in 1959.
Under Zalszupin's visionary leadership, the company's designs often draw inspiration from architectural giants like Oscar Niemeyer, Le Corbusier, and Lucio Costa. Emphasizing Brazil's rich biodiversity, L'Atelier São Paulo showcases local tropical hardwoods such as jacaranda, imbuia, and rosewood in its coffee tables, dining chairs, and bar carts, highlighting the country's diverse forests.
