Lella and Massimo Vignelli were a husband-and-wife design team who made significant contributions to the fields of industrial, graphic, and product design. The Vignellis were known for their minimalist, modernist aesthetic and their focus on simplicity, functionality, and timeless design.
The Vignellis established their design firm, Vignelli Associates, in New York City in 1971, and went on to work with a wide range of clients, including IBM, American Airlines, Bloomingdale's, and the New York City Subway system. They designed everything from furniture and consumer products to corporate identities and public spaces.
Some of their most notable designs include the iconic Stendig Calendar, the New York City Subway map, and the American Airlines identity and livery. They also designed the interior of the original St. Peter's Church in New York City, which was later transformed into the Museum of Modern Art Design Store.
The Vignellis received numerous awards throughout their careers, including the AIGA Gold Medal, the National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Royal Society of Arts' Bicentenary Medal.
