Lisa Bartleson
American, 1968
Lisa Bartleson is a California-based interdisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, installation, sculpture, and ceramics. Known for her deep engagement with the Light and Space movement, she explores the intricate relationship between materiality, light, and perception. Bartleson’s art is characterized by repetitive, meditative mark-making and vibrant, lustrous color strips, through which she captures the subtle, dynamic transitions between hues. Her paintings evoke a sense of calm and introspection, creating both a kinetic and still experience as each piece leads the viewer toward a focal point within its composition.
Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Bartleson relocated from Los Angeles to Petaluma in early 2016, drawn to the region’s diffused light, expansive landscapes, and small-town atmosphere—qualities that resonate with her creative vision. In 2017, she presented The Memory Project at the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster, California. Her work has also been featured in exhibitions at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, among other venues.
