Louis Comfort Tiffany

American, 1848 - 1933

Louis C. Tiffany founded Tiffany Studios was known for his work in decorative arts and especially for stained glass. He was the son of the founder of Tiffany & Company, the luxury retailer renowned for its exquisite jewelry and silver. Louis Tiffany was exposed to the company’s highly organized workshops and showrooms filled with the finest decorative objects from around the world. This undoubtedly stimulated his appreciation for fine craftsmanship and innovative design, which became the hallmark of his celebrated Tiffany Studios. He became one of the leading tastemakers of the Gilded Age.

Initially, Tiffany devoted his creative energies to painting landscapes and exotic scenes from his travels across the world, but his interests quickly expanded into interior design and decorative arts. Established in 1881, Tiffany Studios was originally known as the Louis C. Tiffany and Company, Associate Artists. Although glass was his specialty, Tiffany experimented with furniture, metalwork, textiles, pottery, enamels, jewelry, and book design. Tiffany was a tireless innovator who experimented with new glassmaking methods and ultimately pioneered Favrile glass, a richly-hued, iridescent glass that became his trademark. Today, Tiffany lamps are in high demand and can often command high prices at auction.
