Artist Biography: Lucia Heffernan
Lucia Heffernan, born in 1966, grew up in Tainan City, Taiwan, where her father worked as a translator for the US Air Force and her mother, an art teacher, instilled a love for creativity in her three daughters. From an early age, Lucia honed her artistic skills, crafting intricate outfits for paper dolls while balancing a busy schedule of school, ballet, and karate.
In 1979, significant political changes prompted her family to relocate to upstate New York, where Lucia faced the challenge of adapting to a new culture as a 13-year-old who spoke no English. Through her artistic talent, she found a way to communicate, excelling in art and math throughout high school. Encouraged by a supportive art teacher, she entered several competitions, ultimately earning a scholarship to Cooper Union. However, parental concerns about safety led her to complete her Fine Arts and Design degree at Binghamton University in 1989.
After graduating, Lucia took a gap year as a ski instructor at Killington, Vermont, before moving to Boston to work as a graphic designer at Coopers & Lybrand. It was during this time that she met her husband, Ron Heffernan. The couple later relocated to New York City, where Lucia adapted to the rapid changes in the design industry brought on by the dot-com boom. In 1993, she co-founded Lead Dog Design, a graphic design firm that grew rapidly and garnered attention from larger investment companies.
After successfully selling Lead Dog Design in 2000, Lucia and Ron contemplated early retirement, relocating to Utah to pursue a more relaxed lifestyle. During this time, Lucia returned to her passion for painting, focusing on images of her children and pets. Her fascination with animals led her to create whimsical artworks featuring chicks and mice in human-like scenarios, culminating in her first public exhibition at the Art & Soup charity event in 2014.
As her popularity grew, Lucia embraced digital platforms to showcase her work, navigating the challenges of unauthorized use of her art online. With the guidance of a licensing agent, she began managing the reproduction of her paintings and expanding into European markets.
Lucia’s artistic journey continued to flourish, with notable successes including being a finalist in the 2018 Art Renewal Center Salon and a solo exhibition at the Musei di San Salvatore in Italy in 2022. In 2019, she founded Workshop SLC, a platform for artists that evolved into a vibrant art center.
Looking ahead, Lucia Heffernan is set to participate in exhibitions in South Korea in 2025, continuing to inspire through her unique artistic vision and dedication to the craft.
