Lucy Lewis
American
Lucy Martin Lewis (1898-1992) was a Native American potter from the Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico. She is considered one of the most important figures in 20th century Pueblo pottery, and her work is highly sought after by collectors and museums.
Lewis learned the art of pottery making from her mother and grandmother, and began making her own pottery in the 1920s. She is best known for her traditional black-on-white pottery, which features intricate geometric patterns and designs inspired by the natural world.
Lewis's work has been exhibited in museums around the world, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She received numerous awards and honors throughout her career, including the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1982. Her legacy continues to inspire and influence contemporary Native American potters today.
