Artist Bio: Manabu Mabe
Manabu Mabe (September 14, 1924 – September 22, 1997) was a celebrated Japanese-Brazilian painter whose journey from humble beginnings to artistic acclaim is both inspiring and impactful. Before finding his place in the art world, Mabe worked as a vendor of hand-painted ties in São Paulo, where his creative spirit began to flourish.
In the late 1950s, Mabe's talent gained widespread recognition. He won the prestigious top award at São Paulo's Contemporary Art Salon and was celebrated as Brazil's best painter at the São Paulo Bienal. His achievements continued to grow, culminating in receiving top honors for artists under 35 at Paris's inaugural biennial.
Tragically, on January 30, 1979, after an exhibition in Tokyo, 53 of Mabe's paintings were lost when a Varig 707-323C airplane disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while en route to Rio de Janeiro. The cause of the disappearance remains a mystery, as the wreckage was never found.
Mabe's works are held in esteemed collections worldwide, including the São Paulo Contemporary Art Museum, the Modern Art Museum in Rio de Janeiro, the Boston Contemporary Art Museum, and the Beaux-Arts Museum of Dallas. His notable piece, a Still Nature oil on canvas, can be found in the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro. Additionally, his artwork is displayed at the National Art Museum of Bolivia and the V+R Sapoznik Art Collection.
Mabe passed away in São Paulo on September 22, 1997, leaving behind a legacy of artistic innovation and a body of work that continues to resonate within the art community.
