Nick Olsen is an Australian artist whose work is designed to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. His paintings are characterized by a delicate balance of familiarity and nostalgia, achieved through a distinct approach to light and color. Olsen’s creative process involves spending extensive time observing his surroundings—often in the inner urban areas of Brisbane and Sydney—and reflecting on these scenes in terms of paint. Through this process, he aims to capture the subtlety of color and tone that brings a sense of place to life, inviting viewers to connect with the scenes in a personal way.
In 2011, Olsen was honored with the prestigious Royal Overseas League Travelling Scholarship, which took him to London and Scotland for a six-week residency. This experience proved pivotal in shaping his artistic journey, providing him with invaluable studio time to refine his technique both in the studio and en plein air. The residency also boosted his confidence and marked a significant turning point in his career.
The scholarship culminated in a major exhibition in London, and Olsen continues to exhibit his work internationally, including with the Rebecca Hossack Gallery. His ongoing career reflects a deep commitment to the exploration of light, space, and atmosphere, as well as a passion for capturing the nuances of the urban landscape.
