Orazio De Gennaro
Italian
Orazio De Gennaro is an artist whose abstract landscape paintings draw deeply from the essence of his ancestral homeland near Naples, Italy, specifically around the ancient Roman sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. His work is characterized by a profound connection to the land, with elements such as light, texture, shadows, and color forming the foundation of his artistic expression.
Initially trained as a sculptor, De Gennaro's tactile engagement with materials remains central to his practice. He employs an earth palette that includes handmade lime paint, natural pigments, graphite, handmade oil pastels, sand, dirt, and straw. The creation of these materials is an integral part of his artistic process, allowing him to build up surfaces through layering, scraping, and sometimes torching to achieve depth and immediacy in his work.
Since moving to New York in 1983, De Gennaro transitioned from sculpture to painting, yet he maintains a commitment to the physicality of his materials. His oil pastels are crafted with wax and marble dust, applied to a thick impasto of lime and sand, resulting in a sensuous texture reminiscent of sculpture. Among his notable achievements is a monumental 27-foot abstract landscape created for the lobby of the historic Knickerbocker Hotel in Manhattan.
Through his unique approach, Orazio De Gennaro invites viewers to engage with the elemental beauty of his “inner landscape,” transforming the tactile qualities of his materials into a rich visual experience.
