Pia Maria Raeder

German, 1978
Pia Maria Raeder was born in 1978 in Germany. After earning a degree in political science, and working as a TV reporter, her creative yearnings and the will to inscribe her work in the long term led to a radical life change. After studying as an apprentice with a craftsman, she decided to dedicate herself to experimenting with shapes and materials, seeking inspiration for her designs from the natural world.
From simple beechwood sticks, which are individually cut, sanded, arranged and then painted, Pia Maria Raeder creates functional, strikingly biomorphic sculptures. Each object is unique and meticulously hand crafted. More than 400 hours of work and 29,000 beech rods are used to produce the ‘Sea Anemones Family’ set, made of three side tables complemented by two sculptures. The artist states, “In my work with beech rods, I love the challenge of overcoming the contradictions in the material as I play with it. Natural beech rods are straight, but combined at different heights, these rods take on a new form, resembling a wave with shadowy reflections.
Pia Maria Raeder's "Sea Anemones" collection is produced exclusively for Gallerie BSL.
