Piero Fornasetti
Italian, 1913 - 1988
Piero Fornasetti was an Italian painter, designer, and sculptor best known for his iconic decorative arts and furniture pieces featuring intricate and whimsical designs. He was born in Milan, Italy in 1913 and studied painting at the Brera Academy in Milan.
Fornasetti's career began in the 1930s as a painter and graphic designer, but he soon became interested in the decorative arts, designing everything from furniture and lighting to tableware and textiles. His designs were characterized by their playful and surreal imagery, often featuring repeated motifs such as the face of the 19th-century opera singer Lina Cavalieri.
Fornasetti's work was highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts throughout the 20th century, and his pieces are now considered iconic examples of mid-century Italian design. His designs continue to be produced and celebrated by the Fornasetti Atelier, which was founded by his son Barnaba in 1988. Today, Fornasetti's work can be found in museums and private collections around the world.
