Raphaëlle Goethals
Belgian
Raphaëlle Goethals, a native of Brussels, Belgium, found her artistic roots under the glazed skies and amidst the devotional works of Van Eyck and Van Der Weyden. Immersed in influential exhibitions across Brussels, Paris, and Basel, Goethals began her journey in painting at an early age.
In 1980, Goethals earned a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Atelier 75 in Brussels, and her pursuit of artistic excellence led her to Los Angeles in 1981, where she furthered her education at the Otis Art Institute. Drawn to the vast landscapes and unique quality of light, she later relocated to New Mexico in the mid-nineties, a pivotal period that saw the development of her mature painting style.
Renowned for her distinctive layered encaustic and mineral pigment abstractions, Goethals has crafted a sophisticated and unique artistic vocabulary, evident in distinct groups of paintings evolving concurrently. While her work nods to minimalism and the fundamental aspects of Light and Space, it also reimagines the classical "question of Painting."
Blending the expressive and the minimal, Goethals' emotive and refined encaustic paintings have garnered widespread recognition, with features in Art Forum, Art in America, THE, Luxe, Architectural Digest, and various regional publications. Her creations, held in numerous selective private and corporate collections, stand as a testament to her mastery and impact in the art world.
