Royal Vienna Porcelain

Austrian
Royal Vienna Porcelain, distinguished by its unique decorative style, draws inspiration from the artistry of the Renaissance era infused with elements of Greek Classicism. Characterized by intricate designs, lavish gilding, elaborate borders, and occasionally adorned with Ormolu or Metal Mounts, these wares showcase exquisitely detailed paintings imbued with a romantic aesthetic and soft hues.

Primarily intended for display as art pieces, Royal Vienna porcelain encompasses a wide array of ornamental items such as urns, vases, and portrait plates. While some exceptionally fine chinaware was crafted for practical use, it was reserved for the grandest of occasions.

Produced under the auspices of the Habsburg Royal Family at the ‘Imperial & Royal Porcelain Manufactory’ in Vienna, this porcelain holds the distinction of being Europe's oldest hard-paste porcelain manufacturer after Meissen in Germany. Operating from 1718 to 1864, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory produced top-tier porcelain that rivaled the renowned Meissen and Sevres.

Original Royal Vienna porcelain from the Habsburg period is a prized rarity, primarily found in esteemed museums and private collections. Contemporary versions often bear resemblance to the originals and were predominantly crafted during the 19th century by various companies worldwide seeking to emulate the prestigious brand. Original pieces can be identified by the distinctive mark resembling an upside-down beehive, typically underglazed in blue on Habsburg-era pieces.
