Steve Snell is an artist driven by a thirst for adventure, both in life and through his work. Recently, he embarked on an extraordinary journey, paddling and painting the entire 2,341 miles of the Missouri River in a canoe, all in pursuit of artistic inspiration. In another whimsical quest for adventure, he even floated part of the Connecticut River on a couch boat.
His art delves into themes of American history, mythology, and the iconic Western landscape. Snell has served as an Artist-in-Residence at several esteemed locations, including Tallgrass National Preserve in Kansas, Teton ArtLab in Wyoming, and the historic Chilkoot Trail in Alaska and British Columbia, with sponsorship from the National Parks Service and Parks Canada.
Snell’s work is showcased at several prominent galleries, including Weinberger Fine Art in Kansas City, Missouri, Courtney Collins Fine Art in Big Sky, Montana, Momentum Gallery in Asheville, North Carolina, and Mountain Galleries in Canada. He holds an M.F.A. in Studio Art from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, as well as a B.F.A. in Painting and a B.S. in Art Education from Miami University. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Art and the Sosland Family Chair of Foundation Studies at the Kansas City Art Institute.
