Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt Jr
American
Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt Jr. was an American statesman, soldier, and conservationist who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He was born on October 27, 1858, in New York City, to a wealthy and influential family. Roosevelt attended Harvard University and later went on to study law at Columbia University. He entered politics in 1882, serving in various roles in New York state government before becoming Assistant Secretary of the Navy under President William McKinley.
Roosevelt gained national prominence as a hero of the Spanish-American War, leading his "Rough Riders" in a charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba. He was later elected governor of New York in 1898 and went on to serve as vice president under McKinley.
Following McKinley's assassination in 1901, Roosevelt became the youngest president in US history at the age of 42. As president, he pursued a progressive agenda, including trust-busting, conservation of natural resources, and the regulation of business. Roosevelt also played a key role in the construction of the Panama Canal, which opened in 1914.
After leaving office in 1909, Roosevelt continued to be involved in public life and pursued his passion for conservation, establishing national parks and forests and advocating for the protection of wildlife. He also briefly ran for a third term as president in 1912 as the candidate of the Progressive Party. Roosevelt died on January 6, 1919, at the age of 60. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and dynamic presidents in American history.
