Valentino S.p.A. is a renowned Italian luxury fashion house founded in 1960 by Valentino Garavani. It is part of the Valentino Fashion Group and is headquartered in Milan, with creative direction based in Rome. Since October 2008, the creative director has been Pierpaolo Piccioli, initially in collaboration with Maria Grazia Chiuri until 2016. The Valentino Beauty license is held by L'Oreal.
Valentino's journey began in 1960 when Garavani opened a fashion house in Rome with the support of his father and Giancarlo Giammetti. The brand's international debut in 1962 in Florence marked the beginning of its rise to prominence. Valentino became particularly popular in 1967 with the release of its “no colour” collection, which notably eschewed psychedelic patterns, then popular in the fashion world. The iconic V logo was introduced during this period. The brand expanded globally, with boutiques in New York City and other cities. In 1985, Valentino showcased its first menswear collection at Milan Fashion Week.
Valentino has been celebrated for its exquisite wedding dresses, worn by notable figures such as Elizabeth Taylor, Anne Hathaway, and Princess Madeleine of Sweden. In 1998, Valentino and Giammetti sold the company to the Holding di Partecipazioni Industriali (HdP), and later, in 2002, HdP sold Valentino to Marzotto Apparel. The brand saw further changes in ownership, with Permira acquiring Valentino in 2007, followed by Mayhoola's acquisition in 2012.
Under the leadership of CEO Jacopo Venturini, Valentino made significant changes, including going fur-free in 2022 and focusing on its main line, discontinuing Red Valentino. The brand also adopted and then abandoned a co-ed model for its fashion shows. In 2023, Kering purchased 30% of Valentino with plans to acquire the entire company by 2028. Valentino has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability and education in the fashion industry, earning awards for its efforts.
In March 2024, Valentino announced the departure of Pierpaolo Piccioli as creative director and the appointment of Alessandro Michele as his successor. Michele, known for his work at Gucci, will debut his first collection for Valentino in Spring/Summer 2025. Throughout its history, Valentino has produced a range of fragrances and has had notable advertising campaigns featuring renowned photographers and celebrities. The brand has also been involved in legal battles, including a lawsuit against counterfeiters and disputes over its flagship store in New York City.
