Vico Magistretti

Italian
Vico Magistretti, born on October 6, 1920, in Milan, Italy, was a distinguished architect, industrial designer, and educator whose work left a significant mark on 20th-century design. His early career began under the mentorship of the humanist architect Ernesto Nathan Rogers, contributing to notable projects such as the innovative round church, Santa Maria Nascente, in the experimental QT8 neighborhood of Milan.
After graduating from the Politecnico di Milano in 1945, Magistretti initially worked in urban design before shifting his focus to mass-produced furniture and lighting. His designs gained widespread acclaim, particularly the Carimate chair, which blended rustic charm with modern sophistication and became a bestseller for Cassina.
Magistretti's contributions to design earned him numerous accolades, including two Compasso d'Oro awards and the Gold Medal from the Chartered Society of Industrial Artists & Designers in 1986. His work is represented in prestigious museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Pompidou Centre.
A dedicated educator, Magistretti taught at the Royal College of Art in London for two decades and held a Royal Designer for Industry title. His influence extended beyond the classroom, inspiring a generation of designers, including Jasper Morrison, who recalls Magistretti’s passion for the field.
Magistretti passed away on September 19, 2006, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by the Vico Magistretti Foundation, which continues to honor his contributions to design and architecture. His enduring impact is reflected in exhibitions and collections, ensuring that his vision remains alive in the world of design.
