American, 1889
American furniture company Bernhardt was founded in 1889 by John M. Bernhardt in Lenoir, North Carolina. The company started by making bedroom furniture out of the region's native white oak. Despite labor shortages, the depression, World Wars and other setbacks the Bernhardt family continued to persist and by the 1950s upholstered furniture became it's major product category and included the launch of the "Flair" division. As the company continues it expands into hospitality, design, outdoor furniture and other ventures. In 1983, Bernhardt launched the Bernhadt Design commercial line. Today, Bernhardt is one of the largest family-owned furniture copmanes in the world with 3rd & 4th generation family members actively involved. Vintage Bernhardt Furniture remains popular worldwide.
