Yki Nummi
Finnish, 1925 - 1984
Yki Nummi was a Finnish industrial designer and architect, born on May 15, 1925, in Viipuri, Finland (now Vyborg, Russia), and passed away on December 17, 1984, in Helsinki, Finland. He is known for his contributions to modern Finnish design, particularly in the areas of lighting and furniture design.
Nummi began his career as a lighting designer, creating innovative and elegant lighting fixtures for a range of public and private spaces. His most famous lighting design is arguably the "Lokki" pendant lamp, which he created in 1960 for the Finnish lighting manufacturer, Idman. The Lokki lamp features a distinctive, organic shape that is reminiscent of a seagull in flight and has become an iconic example of mid-century modern design.
In addition to his work in lighting design, Nummi also created a range of furniture designs, including chairs, tables, and shelving units. His furniture designs were characterized by their simple, functional forms and use of high-quality materials, such as wood and leather.
Nummi's designs were highly influential in shaping the Scandinavian modernist aesthetic, and his work is widely regarded as some of the finest examples of Finnish design from the mid-20th century. Many of his designs remain in production today and continue to be popular with design enthusiasts around the world.
