Yvonne Laur
American
Marie-Yvonne Laur (July 21, 1879 – 1943) was a talented French painter born in Paris, renowned for her enchanting depictions of cats. She honed her skills in the vibrant art scene of late 19th-century Paris, becoming a proficient genre painter and eventually specializing in delightful feline portraits. Known affectionately as "Yo Laur," she signed her works with this distinctive name.
As the middle class grew during this period, so did the popularity of domestic pets, particularly cats and dogs. This cultural shift led to a burgeoning demand for animal-themed art, a trend that would have been unthinkable in the 18th century. Cats became a favored subject among female artists, with Laur joining the ranks of successful contemporaries like Henrietta Ronner and Maud Earl.
Laur regularly exhibited her works at the Salon des Artistes Français, becoming a member in 1908 after receiving an honorable mention for her contributions. Her exceptional draughtsmanship, combined with a playful animation of her subjects and a rich palette, makes her art instantly captivating and beloved by viewers.
