Signed by robert mapplethorpe. Arthur Rimbaud was eighteen years old when he wrote his prose poem Un saison en enfer (A Season in Hell), first published in 1873. It was written in the aftermath of the break-up of his tempestuous relationship with Paul Verlaine, who had attempted to kill him with a revolver earlier that year. Here, Rimbaud's original French text and Paul Schmidt's English translation are accompanied by eight photogravure photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe, including his 'Self-portrait with Horns, 1985.'

First edition thus, number 970 of 1000 copies signed by Paul Schmidt and Robert Mapplethorpe in pencil on the colophon; 4to (288 x 189 mm, 11¼ x 7½ in); 8 photogravure plates, loose tissue guards lightly creased, parallel text in French and English, handling marks to a couple of pages; original red morocco, titles lettered in black to spine and front, minor fading to spine, publisher's black suede-lined cloth over board slipcase, lightly worn, marked, and faded; [vi], xii, 87, [11]pp.
