This landmark of mountaineering literature is considered by many to be the most famous mountain travel book of the period, by the most famous mountaineer.

The de luxe definitive edition of the most famous of all mountaineering books. Whymper was obsessed with making the first ascent of the Matterhorn. The price he had to pay for this was the loss of four of his companions in the most celebrated mountain disaster of all time. Although his writings and lectures brought him success his life was ruined by the tragedy which followed his moment of triumph.

Fourth edition, 8vo. (23 x 17cm), xviii, 468pp, illustrated with 23 full-page plates, of which one folding, 107 text vignettes and five folding maps; original cream decorative cloth gilt by Zaehnsdorf (binder's label on front pastedown), morocco label to spine, top edge gilt, original cream coloured dust-wrapper, housed in original decorated slipcase, some wear to the edges of slipcase, green morocco label, gilt lettered; overall a very good copy.
