Description
Pomo Indian Basket Weavers, their Baskets and the Art Market
EXPEDITION MAGAZINE, VOLUME 40, NUMBER 1, SPRING 1998
Soft-cover. New.
$20. + shipping
This publication is quite rare. It offers the collector an unparalleled view of Pomo weaving in the early 20th century.
This Special Issue of Expedition Magazine from the Penn Museum accompanied the very important exhibit of the same name. Utilizing the well-documented Deisher Collection of Pomo basketry at Penn Museum, this exhibit features Pomo weavers with their baskets, which are among the finest baskets ever woven. Deisher was a rare collector in his day who insisted that detailed weaver information accompany any baskets that he purchased.
"Pomo Indian Basket Weavers, Weavers and the Art Market" traveled to the Grace Hudson Museum, the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, the George Gustav Heye Center of the National Museum of the American Indian, and the Penn Museum.
Articles in the magazine are:
"Change and Continuity-Transformations of Pomo Life" by Victoria Patterson
"The Development of the Commercial Market for Pomo Indian Baskets" by Sherrie Smith-Ferri
"Building a Collection-Native Californian Basketry at the University of Pennsylvania Museum" by Judith Berman
"Pomo Basket Weavers in the University of Pennsylvania Museum Collections" by Sally McLendon -
