Description
An Exceptional French Japonisme Ormolu and Champlevé Enamel Five-Piece Clock Set, In the Manner of Edouard Lièvre, circa 1870, Paris.
This extraordinary French Japonisme clock set, crafted in the manner of the celebrated designer Edouard Lièvre, exemplifies the pinnacle of 19th-century decorative artistry. Comprising a central mantel clock, a pair of elegant vases, and a pair of three-light candelabra, the set combines opulent ormolu with vibrant champleve / cloisonne enamel in a striking blue and turquoise ground, adorned with intricate tropical floral motifs.
The mantel clock is crowned by an imposing ormolu foo dog finial, a symbol of protection and strength, which highlights the Japonisme fascination with East Asian artistry. The clock features a finely detailed ormolu frame, while its enamel dial is inscribed with the significant dates "3. AUGUST. / 1824 / 1874,". The pair of vases boast graceful forms and exquisite cloisonné detailing, complementing the clock's opulence. Completing the ensemble, the three-light candelabra echo the vivid enameling and floral accents, their elegant branches enhancing the harmonious design.
This five-piece set is a tour de force of Lièvre-inspired design, blending French sophistication with exotic influences. The inclusion of the foo dog finial adds an additional layer of cultural depth and symbolism, making it a rare and highly desirable example of 19th-century Japonisme.
