Antique Alabaster, Ormolu and Silvered Bronze Clock Set in the Neo-Grec Style

$ 22,500
  • Description
    Antique Alabaster, Ormolu and Silvered Bronze Clock Set in the Neo-Grec Style
    French, Late 19th Century
    Clock: Height 55cm, width 33cm, depth 16cm
    Candelabra: Height 62.5cm, width 19cm, depth 19cm

    This unusual clock set combines pale alabaster with both silvered and gilded bronze in a remarkable blend. The central body of the clock is cast from angular alabaster layers, that are applied with gilded and silvered decorative elements, including foliate bands, applied oval portrait panels, and Greek key designs. The clock is surmounted by a decorated kylix cup, which is topped by a sweet cherub. On each side of the flared base is a grotesque, and the clock stands on four paw feet.

    Almost identical in design, the two flanking candelabra are centred by amphora-shaped bodies, applied with further oval portrait-masks. A trio of candle sconces are supported by two arms, one of silvered bronze and the other of gilt. The angular supports terminate in hoof feet. Like the clock, the candelabra are also capped with a putti finial.

    The colour combinations of the shining metals and the pale mineral on this clock set are particularly pleasing, making it a highly desirable collector’s item.
