Description
Charles X period gilt-bronze and malachite sculptural mantel clock
French, c.1830
Height 55cm, width 40cm, depth 18cm
Mounted by a seated maiden in robes with books to her feet upon a circular dial with enamelled chapter ring, and set on a base with further bronze icons and acanthus darting, this excellent piece is a large mantel clock dating to the Charles X period of France in the early 18th century, c.1830. With a dial cast in ormolu amidst a white enamel dial and fronted with a five-pointed star, it comes in a malachite veneered case, which is surmounted with a figurative sculpture of a Classical maiden resting atop a globe, exemplifying the style of the time, in which the Empire manner was toned down and softened with a less flamboyant, more subtle, sophisticated, sumptuous stylistic manner. -
