Description
Louis XVI period Neoclassical ormolu and malachite mantel clock
French, Late 18th Century
Height 53cm, width 36cm, depth 14cm
Encapsulating the stylistic refinement and grace of the Louis XVI period and the emergence of the Neoclassical over the Baroque, this beautiful mantel clock dates to late eighteenth century France, and is a superb example of the artistic quality and skill of the decorative arts at this time.
It features a dial face, signed 'Degre a Paris,' set against a central column adorned with a malachite veneer, and flanked by a pair of smaller similar pedestals, which are interlinked with chains and slender bodies and heads of griffins. These are similarly chained to a small urn surmount above, all in ormolu, and decorated throughout by elegant foliate mounts. -
