Description
Rococo style gilt bronze mantel clock with Sèvres style porcelain plaques
French, late 19th Century
Height 45cm, width 32cm, depth 15cm
This fine mantel clock is a charming demonstration of the Rococo style. The clock features a gilt bronze body richly moulded with foliage detailing, such as curling acanthus leaves and rocailles. The plinth-like clock case is raised on a flat base above four feet and flanked by twin gilt bronze scrolls. The case contains a porcelain clock dial, painted with an assemblage of musical instruments and flowers, and inscribed with gilt hour marks. The remainder of the case is further inset with porcelain plaques in the Rococo style: below the dial, a parcel gilt plaque depicts a young amorous couple, and the base and the flanks house further conforming plaques. The clock is surmounted by an elaborate gilt bronze finial comprised of a laurel crown and a flambeau torch.
