Important Rooster Weathervane

Sold Sold
  • Description
This finely carved and painted wood weathervane is a true rarity for both its age and condition. It is one of a handful of survivors from the early 19th century. Early wooden weathervanes were fashioned by hand and were a testament to the artists’ sense of design and carving skills. Full bodied pieces were challenging to execute; most surviving examples from this early period were flat, board weathervanes carved with details and embellished to give a sense of dimensionality. This is a glorious example of weathervane art.

Exhibited at the Mingei International Museum, San Diego, California, August 8, 1996–December 29, 1996.
Illustrated in Gerald Wertkin and Jack Larsen, American Expressions of Liberty: Art of the People, by the People, for the People (Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1997), pages 48, 49.
