Japanese Meiji silver and enamel picture frame, ca 1890. Rectangular window in serpentine surround with open front on velvet ground; in polychrome enamel are blossoming prunus branches, chrysanthemums, and irises as well as a crane and peacock—modish blooms and birds for the sophisticated Western market. With glass, silk lining, and velvet back and hinged easel support for portrait (vertical) display. No marks visible. Very good condition with strong color. Some velvet wear.
