FRENCH EARLY 20TH CENTURY ARMILLARY SPHERE ON COLUMN PEDESTAL
-
Description
A marvelous 20th century French copper and brass armillary, resting atop a column-form pedestal. The fluted pedestal has a 16″ diameter and made of reconstituted stone that has acquired excellent patina from years of outdoor exposure. It supports the spherical armillary. These instruments were separately designed by the ancient Greeks and Chinese as a means of charting the celestial bodies. The use of charting stars as an early directional means has forever tied the armillary to the sea and navigation in general. This example is intended for ornamental use with its rubbed brass and copper, covered in blue-green verdigris. It will make for a fabulous addition to a conservatory, garden or green space.
